About Me

Cassia Margolis
On good days, I am an artist. On bad days, I am still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up. I also write about things...it helps to keep me from punching holes in the walls.

About my Artwork

How do you know when a piece of artwork is finished?
This question was one I asked my art teacher, in high school; and his answer has been providing me with direction in my art for four decades.
For me, it is when you would detract from it by adding anything else, such as an extra line or detail.

My quest is to render a portrait of a person that is accurate- you know who it is, it looks like them, has a sense of their character, has the weight of the pose, the tension in the body, but there are no extraneous marks. The light and shadow , the reflection under the chin from the sweater are there, but not anything unneeded to show that. The minimum.

In my still-life paintings , it is the same. How little "detail" can I put in, and the viewer will still see it as a heavily patterned cloth with complex objects and shadows? Can I have the amount of the canvas that is "detailed" be as little as 10%, as 5%, and, yes, still have the viewer see it as what they "think" it is?

My artwork contains a great deal of abstraction. huge areas are " untouched" ( not to be confused with "unfinished), large areas are represented as very two-dimensional and flat. How little can I add to fool the mind? Not the eye, the eye is the instrument- the mind/brain is what is interpreting, and i want it to see what I am creating as rich and full and complete. When does Gestalt kick in?

On occasion, I will detour from this path that I am on. I will be lured away by an idea I want to pursue, or by something in someone else's art, or in the real world, that has captured my fancy. But, even these detours are usually travels that give me more to work with as I pursue my direction.
